Tax debt and collections

Respond to tax collection pressure with a clear strategy.

IRS and California tax collection notices are easier to address when the deadlines, account history, and available options are understood. I help individuals and small businesses move from uncertainty to an informed resolution plan.

The first priority is to understand what the agency is doing now. From there, I evaluate filing compliance, verify the balance, and develop a strategy that fits both the rules and your financial circumstances.

When tax collection help may be appropriate

  • You received a final notice or a deadline-sensitive collection letter
  • A federal or state tax lien has been filed or threatened
  • Your bank account, wages, or other property may be subject to levy or garnishment
  • A revenue officer or other collection representative is contacting you
  • A prior payment arrangement defaulted or is no longer affordable
  • You cannot pay the full balance and need to understand the available alternatives

How I approach tax debt and collection matters

I begin by reviewing the notices, tax periods, agency records, and collection deadlines. This helps distinguish an early collection notice from a matter involving a lien, levy, garnishment, or assigned revenue officer. Urgent response dates are identified before longer-term planning begins.

Resolution usually depends on accurate account information and current filing compliance. I review whether required returns are filed, whether payments and credits were applied correctly, and whether the balance should be questioned. If the amount is accurate, the next step is a financial analysis grounded in income, expenses, assets, and the agency's standards.

Possible paths can include an installment agreement, an offer in compromise, currently not collectible status, or penalty relief. Not every option is available or advisable in every case. I explain the eligibility requirements and tradeoffs, prepare the necessary submission, and communicate with the tax agency throughout the process.
